While many think of Oklahoma as just another flyover state, it’s so much more than that! From rolling hills to serene lakes to exciting cities and stunning waterfalls, the diversity of landscapes here never ceases to amaze us.

If you’re looking for a quick escape that combines fun, beautiful scenery and family-friendly activities, these weekend getaways in Oklahoma are the perfect spot for creating memories and discovering the hidden gems of this underrated state.

Starting with the state capital and one of my personal favorites, Oklahoma City is packed with top-notch entertainment, stunning cityscape views, and a vibrant food scene that will delight any palate.

Its central location makes it easily accessible from anywhere in Oklahoma and even the Midwest, making it an ideal spot for a quick getaway.

Downtown OKC offers so many unique things to do. Sports fans can catch a game at the Paycom Center, home of the OKC Thunder (Go Team!), nestled in the lively Bricktown district. This entertainment hub is filled with restaurants, shops and family-friendly activities such as mini-golf.

Just steps away, you’ll find the lush Myriad Gardens, and Scissortail Park, two must-visit outdoor spaces conveniently located across the street from each other. We love frequenting each of these as a family on the weekends.

History buffs and museum lovers will appreciate Oklahoma City’s impressive cultural offerings. The Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum (one of the National Parks sites in Oklahoma) provides a moving tribute to those affected by the 1995 bombing, while the First Americans Museum celebrates the rich history and culture of local Native American tribes. Both are unforgettable educational experiences for families.

Foodies, prepare to indulge! From Michelin-recognized dining to the best burger joints in the state, OKC’s culinary scene is tough to beat.

Broken Bow

If you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life, Broken Bow, Oklahoma, is a family favorite. Tucked into the foothills of the Kiamichi Mountains, it almost feels like you’ve left Oklahoma completely.

Our family of six visited Broken Bow just a few weeks ago and our kids are already begging to go back.

For me personally, kayaking and hiking are the highlights. Floating down the river in a kayak is such a peaceful way to soak in the scenery, while hiking trails like Friends Trail Loop reward you with waterfalls and forest views that will make you forget you’re still in Oklahoma.

Of course, there’s so much more to do. Outdoor lovers can fish, spot wildlife, or explore Beavers Bend State Park by bike or boat.

Broken Bow Lake is another gem, where you can rent a boat, paddle a kayak, or cast a line for smallmouth bass.

And if you’re traveling with kids, activities like mini-golf, go-karts, and the Hochatown petting zoo keep the whole crew entertained.

When it comes to accommodations, Broken Bow is known for its luxury cabins. After a day of adventure, nothing beats unwinding in a cabin with an outdoor hot tub or fire pit—especially if the stars are out.

Nestled on the shores of Lake Eufaula in eastern Oklahoma, Carlton Landing might just be the state’s best-kept secret. It’s hard to believe how few people know about this hidden gem!

Carlton Landing feels like it’s a world away, offering a charming blend of off-the-grid tranquility and resort-style living right here in Oklahoma. Our family has visited yearly for the last several years and it never ceases to be one of our favorite places for an Oklahoma getaway.

Imagine neighbors sitting on their front porches while kids play freely in communal green spaces–it’s the kind of idyllic scene you’ll find here daily. The entire town is designed to be walkable, but we highly recommend bringing scooters for the kids to maximize the fun!

A day in Carlton Landing is all about simple pleasures and family time. Spend your morning by the pool or playing on the sandy lakeside beach, then head to Mama Tig’s for the best pizza around. As the sun sets, unwind at The Meeting House with an evening drink in hand. There are so many fun things to do for families in Carlton Landing!

Tulsa

Take a trip along historic Route 66 to discover Tulsa, the second-largest city in Oklahoma, located in the northeastern part of the state. Tulsa is a vibrant destination known for its thriving art scene, delectable local food and world class parks.

At the top of any family itinerary should be The Gathering Place–one of the most innovative parks in the country. Your kids will love its imaginative play structures, educational opportunities, and endless space to explore. You can easily spend an entire day here. Just keep in mind, the park often gets very busy on weekends and you’ll want to pack plenty of snacks!

For live entertainment, Tulsa doesn’t disappoint. The BOK Center draws big crowds with top-tier concerts and events, while the historic Cain’s Ballroom offers a more intimate venue steeped in music history. Both venues have event calendars to help you plan your visit.

Art lovers will be captivated by the Philbook Museum of Art, housed in a stunning historic home with world-class exhibits and beautifully maintained gardens. This is a must-visit and my top recommendation for a visit to Tulsa!

Additional kid-friendly spots include the Tulsa Zoo, Gilcrease Museum, Tulsa Botanic Garden and the Oklahoma Aquarium.

Wichita Mountains

If you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life, the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge is the perfect spot. Spanning over 60,000 acrew of beautiful prairie, this refuge is home to free-range buffalo, elk, longhorn cattle and so much more.

The rugged landscape feels like a completely different side of Oklahoma, and it’s one of the best places in the state for an outdoor getaway.

Our family loves to hike, and the Wichita Mountains offer some of the best trails in the state. Whether you’re up for a tough trek or just want a short, scenic walk, there’s a trail for every level.

Along the way, you’ll be treated to incredible views of granite peaks, peaceful lakes, wide-open prairies, and, of course, those legendary Oklahoma sunsets.

Don’t miss Mount Scott, where you can drive or hike to the top for the very best views of the refuge.

After a day of exploring, beeline to Meers Restaurant for one of their famous longhorn burgers. It’s the traditional way to cap off a day in the Wichita Mountains.

Tahlequah is a charming town full of outdoor adventures and rich Cherokee Nation history, It’s best known as the capital of the Cherokee Nation, and its cultural and historical  significance shines throughout the area.

For many families, Tahlequah is synonymous with float trips down the Illinois River. Whether you’re kayaking, canoeing or floating on a raft, the calm waters and gorgeous scenery make this a relaxing and fun experience for all ages.

Spend the day on the river, then explore Tahlequah’s small-town charm with local eateries and shops. If you’re up for more adventure, visit the Cherokee National History Museum or the Cherokee Heritage Center for an educational experience the whole family will enjoy.

Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees is a premier destination for water lovers in northeastern Oklahoma. With over 1,300 miles of shoreline, it’s the ultimate Oklahoma weekend getaway for boating, fishing and lakeside relaxation.

Families flock here for the variety of activities and the chance to make memories on the water. Cruise on a pontoon boat, zip around on jet skis, or simply enjoy the views of Grand Lake.
