As long-time Oklahoma residents, our family couldn’t wait to check out this incredible display of lights, decorations, and Christmas cheer–and it didn’t disappoint! From twinkling tunnels to charming local shops, it was the perfect family outing to kick off the Christmas season.

In this post, we’ll share everything you need to know about visiting the Sapulpa Christmas Chute, including what there is to do, where to park, and tips to make your visit even more enjoyable.

What is the Sapulpa Christmas Chute?

The Sapulpa Christmas Chute is a long-standing Christmas attraction located in downtown Sapulpa, Oklahoma, right on historic Route 66.

In fact, Oklahoma Magazine named it “Oklahoma’s #1 Holiday Destination”!

It features a series of impressive lighted canopies–or “chutes”–that stretch over the streets, creating a tunnel of festive colors and designs. This family-friendly destination is the epitome of small-town Christmas charm and offers visitors a chance to enjoy a variety of festive activities and local shops.

It is truly the best place in the area to see Sapulpa Christmas lights.

How to Get There

Drive time from Tulsa: 20 minutes

Drive time from Oklahoma City: 1 hour 25 minutes

The Christmas Chute is located on Route 66 (Dewey Ave), between Main Street and Elm Street. Take Highway 44 south from Tulsa or north from Oklahoma City to reach Sapulpa. 

Google Maps will take you directly to the chute in downtown.

Parking

Parking can be a bit of a challenge, especially on busy weekends, however we were pleasantly surprised to find a spot just one block away. There are many parking areas surrounding the chute, including designated handicap spots.

With visitors coming and going throughout the day, you shouldn’t have to park too far from the action. We found a convenient spot near Elm Street and Hobson Avenue, which was just a short 1-2 minute walk from the start of the chute.

What to Do

The Christmas Chute Scavenger Hunt

You can’t visit the Christmas Chute in Sapulpa without doing the scavenger hunt–it’s a must for families!

Each chute is themed after a classic Christmas movie, and your mission is to find a few cleverly hidden items that represent that film. It’s easy to join in on the fun: scan one of the QR codes onsite to download the scavenger hunt to your phone, or plan ahead by downloading and printing it from their website.

Our family had a blast working together to spot the hidden items. It’s the perfect way to take your time to fully experience the Christmas Chute while admiring the creativity and effort that goes into bringing it all to life.

Shop

The streets are lined with local boutiques and antique shops, making it the perfect place to mosey in and out of stores–supporting local while crossing things off your Christmas list.

In addition to the charming brick-and-mortar shops downtown, the chute also features pop-up vendors at various times through the season, known as the Merry Market. Located on the east side of the street, these local vendors offer unique gifts, handmade items, and seasonal treats.

We were lucky enough to visit on a day when the Merry Market was open, and it was a fantastic shopping experience. Each vendor’s booth was beautifully decorated for Christmas, adding to the festive atmosphere.

Reserve an Igloo

For a fun, cozy experience, consider renting a private igloo! Each igloo is beautifully decorated with its own festive Christmas theme, making it a magical retreat for your group. Rentals are for two hours and accommodate up to 10 people, providing the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the holiday atmosphere.

The experience includes hot cocoa, fire pits, lawn games, and Bluetooth speakers to set the mood with a Christmas playlist. Prices range from $150-$175 for the two-hour rental.

Dine

You’ll find plenty of dining options to fuel your holiday adventure. The downtown streets are lined with restaurants offering a variety of cuisines, while a dedicated section of food trucks provides quick bites for families that want to eat on the go.

Don’t miss the hot cocoa stands scattered throughout the area, as well as Little Taiyaki, a downtown Sapulpa staple popular for their fish-shaped ice cream cones.

Keep in mind that restaurants tend to fill up quickly, especially on the weekends, so be sure to get your name on the waitlist early in the day.

Christmas Activities

Weekend evenings are full of festive activities, such as live music, photos with Santa and other special events that add to the holiday magic. During our visit, we discovered a cute stand where kids could make their own reindeer food.

Take Advantage of Photo Ops

The Route 66 Christmas Chute is filled with photo opportunities, making it the perfect place to capture a festive family photo. From the beautifully decorated chutes to themed displays, there’s no shortage of Christmas backdrops.

Keep an eye out for Christmas characters in costume, like the Grinch, who often make appearances and are happy to post for photos as well.

Dates and Times

The Sapulpa Christmas Chute is open daily from 8 AM to 10 PM. (Vendor hours may vary.) This Christmas attraction typically runs from the day after Thanksgiving through the Saturday following Christmas.

Tips for Visiting the Christmas Chute

  • Restrooms are available along the chute and are clearly marked. Be aware that these are all porta-potties, so you may want to bring hand sanitizer along.
  • The chute is significantly more crowded after dusk, but for good reason. The Christmas lights add even more magic to this charming downtown area.
  • We recommend allowing around 3 hours to fully explore the Christmas chute. If you plan to enjoy dinner or take your time browsing the shops, consider extending your visit by another couple hours.
