Some destinations are more toddler-friendly than others. Trust me, we’ve had some trips that have been perfect for little ones and others where the location or accommodations made it less than fun.
Consider these factors when planning your trip:
- Travel Time & Transportation: Does your toddler do better with car rides or flights? If flying, a direct flight can be a worthwhile investment to avoid layovers and extra travel stress.
- Built-in Flexibility: Locations like taking your toddler to the beach or state parks provide plenty of opportunities for free play and relaxed schedules, whereas theme parks can be more stimulating and have stricter schedules.
- Walkability: Choosing a vacation rental within walking distance of activities can eliminate extra car time and make transitions easier for babies and toddlers.
- Kitchen & Outdoor Space: If possible, book a vacation rental with a kitchen to prepare familiar meals on demand and an outdoor space so your toddler has room to run around and play. If the rental provides books and toys, even better!
Your Travel Schedule: Sticking to Routines While Staying Flexible
Keeping your toddler’s daily routine as close to normal as possible can help prevent meltdowns and overtired tantrums.
- Maintain Nap & Bedtime Routines: If your child naps after lunch at home, try to keep this pattern on vacation. In addition, mimic your at-home bedtime routine as closely as possible to help your little one relax and sleep peacefully.
- Bring Comfort Items from Home: A familiar blanket, stuffed animal, or sound machine can make sleep easier in a new environment.
- Follow Your Toddler’s Cues: Be prepared to adjust your plans if needed–flexibility is key! To this day, we still have to adjust our travel itinerary on the fly. While it’s easy to feel frustrated, expecting to make adjustments will help everyone adapt more easily.

Toddler Travel Tips for Road Trips vs. Flights
Road Trip Survival Guide
Keep in mind these tips when taking a road trip with a toddler.
- Plan stops every 2-3 hours for movement and playtime.
- Drive during nap time or bedtime if your toddler sleeps well in the car.
- Bring mess-free snacks like crackers, cheese sticks and fruit pouches.
- Use car seat organizers for easy access to toys and essentials.
Flying with a Toddler: Stress-Free Tips
- Book a Morning Flight: Avoid super early flights but aim for mid-morning when toddlers are usually in a better mood. Our ideal flight time is around 9:00am. Most kids are pretty happy in the morning and this gives you plenty of time to get settled in your new location before bedtime.
- TSA PreCheck Saves Time: Skipping long security lines is a game-changer when flying with toddlers.
- Check Out Airport Play Areas: Some airports offer small play areas that are perfect for getting the wiggles out if you have a layover.
- Manage Ear Pressure: To relieve ear pressure, offer a bottle, pacifier, snack, or sucker during takeoff and landing. We also use Earplanes for all of our kids when flying and they are a game-changer for ear pain!
- Save Screen Time: Start with hands-on activities and games and save the screen time for when you really need it.
- Bring a Ride-Along Suitcase: If you can splurge a little on a fun and practial piece of luggage, consider ditching the stroller and just bring a ride-along suitcase!

FAQs
How do I keep my toddler entertained on a long flight?
I suggest switching up activities every 15-20 minutes to keep things engaging.
Instead of giving your toddler all their toys at once, rotate them throughout the trip to keep things fresh and exciting. And if possible, save screen time for later in the travel day–when you really need that extra break!
What’s the bet way to handle toddler jet lag?
Get outside in natural sunlight to help reset their internal clock. Adjust your schedule to the new time zone as soon as you arrive to shorten the length of jet lag.
Should I bring a stroller or carrier?
Both! A lightweight stroller is great for airports and long walks, while a carrier is helpful for hiking or naps on the go.

Is Traveling with a Toddler Even Worth It? (Spoiler: YES!)
Absolutely! While traveling with a toddler has its challenges, and you may have to adjust your destination and schedule to accommodate your little one, it’s an incredible opportunity to see the world through their curious little eyes and bond as a family.
Their excitement over simple experiences–like feeling sand between their toes or seeing an airplane up close–makes all the challenges worthwhile.
Remember What Family Travel is Really About
At the end of the day, family travel isn’t about a perfect itinerary–it’s about making memories together. Embrace the unpredictability, laugh through the chaos, ignore the old lady giving you the side-eye on the airplane, and enjoy the adventure!
