What Is the Cliff Walk?
The Cliff Walk is a 3.5 mile public trail that winds along the shoreline in Newport, Rhode Island. Famous for its breathtaking ocean views and the grandeur of historic Gilded Age mansions, this iconic path draws first-timers and locals alike.
Best of all, the Cliff Walk is open 24/7 and is free to explore.

Where to Park
The best spots to park for starting the Cliff Walk are on Memorial Boulevard near Easton’s Beach or at Forty Steps on Narragansett Avenue. Both offer affordable parking options.
If you plan to tackle the entire trail, parking near Easton’s Beach at the northernmost point is the most convenient choice.
For those wanting to explore just a portion of the trail, Forty Steps is a picturesque starting point. Plus, the street parking near Forty Steps includes access to public restrooms, available seasonally.

What to Expect
Most of the Cliff Walk is paved, providing an easy and accessible path, but certain sections, specifically on the southern end of the hike, feature rugged, rocky terrain that may be challenging for small children or those less steady on their feet.
As the name implies, certain sections of the trail take you right along the edge of cliffs, with just a foot or two separating you from a steep drop-off. This is important to keep in mind if you’re hiking with children.
Along the way, you’ll pass by some of Newport’s most iconic historic mansions, offering a glimpse into the opulence of the Gilded Age. The views of both the ocean and the historic mansions are just incredible!
During peak season or on beautiful weather days, the trail can get quite crowded, especially around the most popular spots. For a quieter experience, consider starting your walk early in the morning, when the path is less busy.
No bikes are allowed on the trail. Dogs on a leash are welcome.
*Note: There is currently a small section of the trail that is closed for repair. There is a well-marked detour, so simply follow the signs to make your way back to the trail.

My Experience
The Cliff Walk was, hands down, one of my favorite parts of our Newport, Rhode Island weekend getaway. We especially loved the southern portion of the trail, where the terrain turned more rugged, and we could climb along the large rocks–a fun and adventurous highlight.
The short tunnels along the trail added an extra layer of charm, and we couldn’t resist stopping often to take photos. We even took our drone up for some stunning aerial shots, capturing the trail’s beauty from a whole new perspective.
Along the way, we took full advantage of the benches thoughtfully placed along the path, giving us the perfect spots to pause and take in the breathtaking ocean views.
It was the ideal blend of relaxation and exploration, and a memory we’ll cherish for years to come.
Even if you only have one day in Newport, you’ll want to make sure the Cliff Walk is at the top of your list!
Pro tip: When you reach the end of the trail at Rejects Beach, you’ll find a convenient trolley stop nearby. Hop on the trolley to easily return to your parking area and skip the walk back.
