There’s nothing worse than coming home from an amazing trip only to realize your photos didn’t quite capture the magic. The good news? It doesn’t have to be that way!

You may not know this about me, but I was a family photographer for over 10 years, and I’ve learned how to turn everyday moments into captured memories you want to look back on again and again.

1. Consider the Lighting

Early mornings and just before sunset offer the best natural lighting for soft, vibrant photos, which is why this time is called the “Golden Hour”.

If you are shooting in the middle of the day, look for shaded (yet still well-lit) areas to avoid the harsh sun.

2. Level the Horizon

When photographing outdoors, check that the horizon line is straight; it makes a big difference! Your phone or camera may have a level tool you can access in the camera’s setting which makes leveling the image a breeze.

While it’s always best to get it right in camera, you can easily adjust it later in your phone’s photo app if needed.

3. Keep Lines Straight

Similar to horizons, pay attention to lines on buildings or architecture. Keeping things like pillars and columns straight makes photos look more polished and intentional. Most cameras and phones will have a grid feature that you can turn on to help with this.

4. Use the “Rule of Thirds”

Imagine your frame divided into a 3×3 grid (or use the grid feature in your camera). Place your subject along these lines or at the intersections to naturally draw the viewer’s eye to it. This creates a balanced, visually appealing composition.

5. Fill the Frame

Get close to the action and fill the frame with your subject, capturing more detail and creating an intimate feel in your photos.

I especially love doing this with child portraits!

6. Play with Negative Space

Sometimes, leaving extra space around your subject can make it stand out even more. Try framing with more sky or background to highlight what matters most.

7. Experiment with Different Angles

If you look at my camera roll, you’ll see multiples angles of every location! Whether it’s a low angle, high angle, or side view, a unique perspective can add a fresh feel to your photos.

8. Capture Candid Moments

Of course you will want those “look at the camera and smile” photos, but candid shots can capture some of the best memories!

Instead of asking everyone to pose, focus on the little details: sandy hands building a castle on your family beach vacation, your toddler jumping into a puddle, or a quiet moment of siblings sharing a snack. These natural, unplanned shots will be some of your favorites to look back on as your kids grow up.

9. Pack a Portable Tripod

Don’t forget to get in the photo! A compact tripod that fits in a backpack is great for setting up shots of your whole family, especially if there’s no one around to help. It’s one of the easiest ways to DIY family photos!

Don’t forget to actually print and frame your travel photos! Your images can be a beautiful and meaningful part of your home decor.

I love using simple, timeless frames to create a photo grid featuring images from our favorite locations.

This not only adds a personal touch to your space, but also tells the story of your travels in a unique and eye-catching way that guests will love.

11. Do a Light Edit

If you want to take your images up a notch, consider doing a light edit. Depending on the image, I typically bring up the brightness, increase the contrast, and add a touch of saturation.

These edits can easily be done on your phone in the photos app, or in a photo editing program such as Adobe Lightroom.

You don’t need an expensive, high-end camera to capture meaningful memories. What matters most is documenting the moments your family will treasure for years to come.

1. Iphone

Using an iPhone (or other quality smartphone) for family travel photography is one of my favorite ways to capture memories and the one I use most often when traveling with our kids.

It’s small, compact, and naturally always with you–no need to lug around extra gear or worry about missing a moment.

The newer iPhone models create impressively sharp image with vibrant colors, and their low-light performance means you can still snap great photos at sunset or indoors without a flash.

To make the most of your iPhone’s capabilities, make sure your camera settings are optimized for high-resolution images, especially if you plan to print them later.

2. Small Digital Camera

A small digital camera is another fantastic option, offering the perfect balance between quality and portability. These compact cameras easily fit in your pocket, making them a hassle-free alternative to bulkier gear. With a wide variety of brands and price points available, there’s something for everyone.

One camera I’ve been eyeing is the Ricoh GR IIIx, which is highly praised in travel blogging communities for its exceptional image quality and versatility. A standout feature of this camera is its ability to edit photos with presets directly in-camera, making it easier than ever to create beautiful images quickly.

3. Full Frame DSLR Camera

A full-frame DSLR or mirrorless camera is the creme-de-la-creme for travel photography, delivering unmatched image quality and making your photos a dream to edit.

I personally own the Canon R6 Mark II and absolutely love it for its sharpness and dynamic range. However, as much as I adore the results, I often leave it behind when traveling. It’s heavy and cumbersome to carry all day, especially when juggling all the other essentials that come with traveling with kids.
