13 Helpful Tips for Visiting the Magnolia Silos in Waco
After visiting the Magnolia Silos twice now—once on a girls’ trip a few years ago, and most recently with my husband and kids—I can confidently say this dreamy Waco destination really does live up to the hype.
Whether you’re a die-hard Fixer Upper fan or just love good food, beautiful spaces, and a little shopping, Magnolia is one of those places that feels like a breath of fresh air.
The intention that Chip and Joanna have put into this gathering space is truly unmatched.
It’s so evident that every little detail has been handpicked with so much care.
Plus, it’s incredibly family-friendly. With plenty of open lawn space for kids to run around, outdoor games, and a laid-back atmosphere, it’s a place where both parents and little ones can enjoy the day.
My personal favorite spots?
The newly restored church—goodness it’s dreamy—and the wiffle ball field, which my kids would have played on all day if we’d let them.
Whether you’re traveling with kids or not, the Magnolia grounds are thoughtfully designed to make everyone feel welcome.
If you’re planning a visit, here are my top tips to make the most of your time at the Magnolia Silos.
1. Take Advantage of the Free Parking

There’s plenty of free parking available around the Silos, and it’s well-marked with signs as you approach. We had no trouble finding a spot within the nearby street parking both times we visited—even on spring break.
If you’re parked a little farther away, Magnolia even runs free shuttles to make the trip easy and quick.
No need to pay for private parking unless you’re in a rush or absolutely want front-row access.
2. Wear Comfortable Shoes
Between browsing the Market, exploring the gardens, walking to Magnolia Press, and playing on the lawn, you’ll be getting your steps in.
The entire grounds are walkable, but there’s a surprising amount of space to cover—especially if you’re pushing a stroller or chasing kids.
A good pair of comfortable shoes makes all the difference, so skip the sandals or heels and opt for sneakers or cushioned flats.
In addition, your kids will want to wear shoes they can easily run and play in around the lawn and wiffle ball field.
3. Come Hungry
The food at Magnolia is half the experience—seriously!
Start with the Silos Baking Co. where you can grab a cupcake or cookie (or both—we don’t judge!).
If you’re planning a sit-down meal, head to Magnolia Table, just a short drive away, but make sure to grab a reservation in advance since it fills up fast.
On the lawn, there are plenty of food trucks (our favorite is Club Sandwich!) with everything from gourmet grilled cheese to wood-fired pizza, plus lemonade stands and the cozy Magnolia Press Coffee Co. for your caffeine fix.
With the variety of options, it’s perfect for families with even the pickiest eaters.
4. Buy Extra Treats at the Bakery on Your Way Out
Magnolia’s bakery is one of the most popular spots on the grounds, and for good reason—the baked goods are incredible.
If you’re planning to bring home cupcakes, cookies, or other treats, I recommend waiting to purchase them at the end of your visit.
That way, you don’t have to carry your goodies all day or worry about them melting in the Texas heat (and yes, they will melt if you’re walking around in the sun).
The line may look long, but it usually moves quickly, and it’s worth the wait.
5. Take a Fixer Upper Tour Around Waco
Round out your Magnolia experience with this highly-rated Fixer Upper Tour!
If you’re a fan of Fixer Upper, you’ll love getting a behind-the-scenes look at the homes and businesses featured on the show. This guided tour takes you around town while sharing fun facts and behind-the-scenes stories.
It’s a fun way to see more of Waco and appreciate just how much the show has transformed the area.
Plus, it’s a great break from the crowds if the Silos are especially busy.
You’ll want to book ahead, as this tour almost always sells out!
6. Plan to Spend a Full Day if You Can
There’s a lot more to Magnolia than just shopping.
Between the Market, bakery, coffee shop, food trucks, outdoor lawn games, dreamy gardens, and extra shops around the block, you can easily spend an entire day here.
Giving yourself a full day means you won’t feel rushed—and if you’re traveling with kids, having that extra margin for snack breaks, bathroom trips, and playtime on the lawn makes the experience so much better.
7. Pick a Hotel Within Walking Distance
Staying at a hotel near the Silos makes your visit so much smoother, especially if you’re planning to spend the whole day there.
It’s great to be able to walk back and rest or drop off shopping bags without having to move your car or battle for parking again.
Here are a few highly-rated hotel options within walking distance of the Silos:
- Hotel Herringbone– Colorful, eclectic hotel with three restaurants, a playground, and views of the silos.
- The Shotgun House from Fixer Upper– Stay at an original Gaines fixer upper from season 3! Just one block from the Silos.
- AC Hotel by Marriott– Located in downtown Waco, this hotel features a large pool and city views.
- The Crossing at 202– These condos are on the second floor of a historic warehouse and are located just steps from the Silos.
8. Have Your Camera Ready
Every corner of Magnolia is photogenic—from the white-steepled church and modern coffee shop to the garden beds, murals, and vintage-style signage.
Whether you’re snapping pictures of your kids playing wiffle ball or grabbing a sweet shot of your coffee and cupcake, you’ll want to capture the moment.
I recommend bringing a real camera if you have one, but even a phone camera will do the trick—you’ll leave with lots of Insta-worthy shots.
9. Visit on a Weekday if You Want Fewer Crowds
If you can swing it, visiting on a weekday will give you a more relaxed experience.
Weekends, especially during spring break or holiday weekends, get very busy.
We visited on a Saturday during spring break and, while we still had a great time, it was definitely crowded.
The only real downside was the 20-minute wait times at the food trucks—but everything else still felt manageable.
If weekends are your only option, plan to arrive right when the Silos open to get ahead of the rush.
10. Bring Sunscreen and a Hat
The Texas sun is no-joke.
While there are a few shaded areas sprinkled throughout the property, you’ll likely be in the sun quite a bit.
Bring sunscreen, a hat, and maybe even a refillable water bottle to keep everyone cool and protected throughout the day.
11. Let the Kids Play!
One of the best parts about visiting Magnolia with kids is how much there is for them to do.
The large open lawn has bean bag chairs, yard games, and a full wiffle ball field where kids can burn off energy while parents relax nearby.
It’s a thoughtful space that truly welcomes families, and it makes the whole experience more enjoyable for everyone.
Bring a ball or grab one from the baskets nearby and let the kids run wild for a bit while you sip your coffee in peace.
12. Check the Event Calendar Before You Go
Magnolia hosts seasonal events like Spring at the Silos, Silobration in the fall, and Christmas at the Silos—these events are beautiful but can draw big crowds.
If you’re planning your visit around one of these dates, know what to expect and book accommodations early.
On the flip side, if you want to avoid large crowds, it’s good to know when not to go.
We went during Spring at the Silos and it was such a fun experience! I highly recommend going during this time. The spring flowers and live music really added to the fun atmosphere.
13. Check Magnolia’s Website or Instagram for Any Closures
Occasionally, parts of the Silos close for private events or maintenance, especially the church or lawn.
Before you visit, it’s worth checking Magnolia’s website or social media for updated hours or any special notices. That way, there are no surprises when you arrive.
Also check out the hours of any restaurant or shop you want to make sure to visit.
Plan Your Visit to The Silos
Every time I visit the Silos, I’m blown away by the attention to detail Chip and Joanna Gaines have poured into every corner.
From the beautifully curated shops to the perfectly branded temporary tattoos for kids—complete with little water bottles to apply them—it’s clear that they’ve created something really special.
What I love most is how relaxed and family-friendly the whole atmosphere feels.
It’s not just a spot for design lovers; it’s a place where kids are welcome to play, explore, and enjoy alongside their parents.
Be sure to step inside the restored church in the center of the grounds—it’s my favorite place on the property. Peaceful, quiet, and lovingly restored, it’s a moment of calm in the middle of the fun.
Whether you’re planning a full weekend in Waco or just popping in for a day trip from your getaway to San Antonio, Austin, or Dallas, the Magnolia Silos are absolutely worth the stop.
