This stretch of the Florida coast truly has some of the most picturesque beaches in the country.

When is the Best Time to Visit?

While spring and early fall offer warm weather without peak season crowds, summer brings the most family-friendly events and activities—just be ready for heat and sunscreen reapplications every hour on the hour.

If your schedule can swing it, another great option is visiting during the shoulder seasons (late spring or early fall). The weather is still warm, yet you’ll be met with fewer crowds.

Fort Walton has options from beachfront condos to vacation homes with full kitchens (which, let’s be honest, helps stretch those food budgets).

• Airbnbs/Condos on Okaloosa Island – Great for extra space + a short walk to the beach = win. We’ve stayed here and loved that it was on the first floor and had space for our family of 6.

This is where Fort Walton shines. The town may be small, but it’s packed with things your kids will talk about long after the vacation ends.

1. The Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park

Dolphin shows, sea lion chats, and hands-on animal encounters make this stop a must. It’s stroller-friendly and right on the water, so the views are nice too.

2. Okaloosa Island Boardwalk

There are shops, ice cream, and ocean views. You’ll find beach access and plenty of space for the kids to roam while you sip something iced and caffeinated.

3. Pirate Cruises + Dolphin Tours

On our future list: kid-friendly pirate cruise or opt for a dolphin-watching boat ride (they’re usually about 90 minutes).

An easy win for a post-beach evening or an “I don’t want to get sandy again” day.

This little gem has well-kept mini golf and a variety of ice cream flavors your kids will absolutely try to sample off your spoon. It’s low-key and a guaranteed hit with all the kids.

Where to Eat With Kids

You know the rule: keep bellies full and moods stay up. Fort Walton has plenty of places to eat that are both parent- and kid-approved.

Family Favorites:

• Stewby’s Seafood Shanty – No-frills, fast seafood. Picnic tables inside and outside. Kids love the hush puppies. It’s a family favorite. We like to go at 5 before the line starts getting long out the door! 
• Parlor Doughnuts – For mornings when a vacation breakfast deserves extra sprinkles. This spot is a local favorite. 
• The Crab Trap (on Okaloosa Island) – Beachfront dining with a side of ocean breeze. The service was surprisingly fast (even with kids in tow), and the food hit the spot after a long day out in the sun. Fresh, flavorful, and exactly what you want after a beach day. Afterward, we strolled along the nearby shops and grabbed a souvenir, which made for the perfect slow-paced evening. 
• Old Bay Steamer – A must for seafood lovers. Their crab legs and steamer pots are chef’s kiss, and while it leans more toward date-night dining, it’s still family-welcoming if your crew can sit for a bit. This restaurant gets busy so we like to go early and beat the line here too.
• Tops Hamburgers – Quick, classic, and really good. Perfect drive thru for grabbing a burger on the go after a beach day when nobody wants to change out of beachwear.
• The CowHead – Don’t let the name fool you! It’s not just for burgers. This local gem serves up a solid breakfast too, including eggs, pancakes, and strong coffee. Later in the day, think juicy burgers, hand-cut fries, and milkshakes the kids will 100% try to finish before you get a sip.

Bonus: Date Night Pick

• Soi Bistro – Sushi, Thai, and dim lighting you haven’t seen in a quick minute. If you can get grandparents to watch the kids and sneak in a night out, this spot is cozy, creative, and a refreshing break from kid menus and fried shrimp. 

Quick tip: Pack some simple snacks (granola bars, fruit, crackers) to keep in your beach bag or car. Most days, we did breakfast in our condo, picnic lunch at the pool or beach, and dinner at a restaurant.

There’s just something about Fort Walton that’s hard to describe until you’ve been. It has the beauty of Destin, but with calmer energy and fewer crowds—which, if you’re wrangling beach toys and sunscreen sticks, is a major win.

Our Typical Daily Itinerary

Every family travels differently, but this rhythm worked so well for us—especially with little ones in tow. It gave us the perfect mix of fun, rest, and flexibility (plus plenty of time for sunscreen reapplication and snack breaks).

Here’s what a day in Fort Walton usually looks like for our crew:

• 7:00–8:00 AM – Kids rise early (ish)! It’s a new, exciting place, and they’re up and ready to go before the coffee finishes brewing. 
• 8:00–9:00 AM – Slow morning in the condo: breakfast, packing beach bags, and slathering on sunscreen.
• 9:00 AM–12:30/1:00 PM – Beach time! We’d head to the sand early before it got too hot. (Quick tip: One year, our kids got a bad sun reaction, so now we take lots of breaks to cool off and hydrate like it’s our job.)
• 1:00–2:00 PM – Lunch inside or by the pool and a little downtime for everyone—especially key for the littles.
• 2:00–3:30 PM – Nap time for the youngest, while one of us took the older kids to the pool. We’d switch off so everyone got a little break.
• 3:30–4:30 PM – Showers, snacks, and room downtime (a few cartoons or quiet play to recharge).
• 5:00 PM – Head to dinner at one of our go-to restaurants. We’d try to eat early before the rush.

• Pro Tip: Avoid peak holiday weeks if possible. Especially around the 4th of July. Condo prices were nearly $1,000 more for the same stay compared to just a few weeks before or after. We always love saving money on vacation rentals!
