6 Unforgettable Weekend Getaways in Kansas
As someone who grew up in Kansas and spent my college years there too, I’ve explored a lot of what the Sunflower State has to offer.
Even now, we make it a point to return at least once a year—usually splitting time between Wichita and Kansas City.
And since we’re huge Royals fans, you can bet we never miss a game when we’re in town. ⚾️
Whether you’re a local looking for a fun change of scenery or planning a quick trip through the Midwest, there are so many underrated Kansas weekend getaways that are perfect for families!
Spoiler alert: Kansas City is my #1 pick!
Wichita
Let’s kick things off in my hometown—Wichita, Kansas!
If you’re looking for a blend of culture, creativity, and classic Midwestern charm, Wichita is the perfect starting point for your Kansas weekend getaway.
Begin your day at the stunning Botanica Wichita, a lush garden oasis filled with themed landscapes and seasonal blooms. Then head to Old Town, where brick-lined streets are home to local boutiques, cozy coffee shops, and inspiring art galleries.
History buffs will love exploring the immersive Old Cowtown Museum, where you can step back in time to the Wild West.
One of our family’s favorite spots is Tanganyika Wildlife Park, which is actually one of the top animal parks in the entire country! Its more than a zoo, it’s truly an interactive wildlife experience that is one-of-a kind.
No trip to Wichita is complete without a visit to the iconic Keeper of the Plains, a breathtaking steel sculpture where the Big and Little Arkansas Rivers meet. Catch it at sunset, walk the pedestrian bridge for unbeatable views, or rent a kayak and paddle right underneath it.
Traveling with kids? Don’t miss Sedgwick County Zoo or Exploration Place. Your kids could easily spend hours at either.
Kansas City
Straddling the Kansas-Missouri border, Kansas City is one of the top destinations for a weekend getaway in Kansas—and my personal favorite! We used to live in the KC metro and return every year for a Royals game because we’re huge fans.
Art lovers should start at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, where general admission is always free. Just around the corner, The Country Club Plaza offers European-inspired architecture, upscale shops, and over 120 restaurants and boutiques.
Sports fans, this city was made for you. Tailgate and cheer on the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium, or catch a Sporting KC soccer match. And of course—go Royals!
Add in a visit to the powerful Negro Leagues Baseball Museum for a dose of meaningful history and inspiration.
Traveling with kids? You’ll love Science City at Union Station, Kansas City Zoo, and Worlds of Fun.
Want a romantic twist? Book a stay at the elegant Raphael Hotel, stroll The Plaza at dusk, and dine with live jazz at Corvino Supper Club.
Lawrence
IHome of the University of Kansas, Lawrence is a lively college town full of character and Jayhawk pride.
Catch a football or basketball game and soak in the electric game-day atmosphere. Then head to Massachusetts Street (Mass Street), lined with eclectic shops, indie eateries, and the ever-popular Granada Theater.
Don’t leave without grabbing a giant slice at Papa Kenos–my personal favorite!
Nature lovers can explore the serene Baker Wetlands, one of the most diverse ecosystems in the state, or spend a peaceful afternoon fishing or picnicking at Clinton State Park.
Wrap up your visit with a stop at the Spencer Museum of Art, where you’ll find art, film, and live performances hosted by KU.
Topeka
As the state capital, Topeka blends rich history, family-friendly fun, and beautiful green spaces.
Start at the Kansas State Capitol Visitor Center, where you can explore stunning murals and climb to the top of the dome for panoramic views. Then visit the gorgeous Ted Ensley Gardens and Ward-Meade Park, or rent a boat and relax on Lake Shawnee.
For something totally unique, head to the Evel Knievel Museum, home to the world’s largest collection of memorabilia from the legendary daredevil.
Traveling with kids? Gage Park is a classic favorite, complete with a train ride and creative play structures. And don’t miss the interactive exhibits at the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center.
Manhattan
Known as the home of the Kansas State Wildcats, Manhattan is a fun, vibrant college town with great eats, outdoor adventure, and a laid-back vibe.
Hike the scenic trails of Konza Prairie, then refuel in Aggieville, a lively district filled with local shops, cafes, and live entertainment—especially buzzing on game days.
The Flint Hills Discovery Center is a must-visit to learn more about the unique prairie ecosystem of the Midwest.
End your day at the stunning Liquid Art Winery & Estate, where you can sip local wine on a hillside patio and enjoy wood-fired pizzas and vineyard views.
Traveling with curious kids? Don’t miss the quirky and affordable K-State Insect Zoo or the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art on campus.
Overland Park
Just south of Kansas City, Overland Park offers big city fun with a small-town feel—making it one of Kansas’s most popular destinations for families.
Start your visit at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens, where you’ll find trails, sculptures, and seasonal flower displays. Admission is only $5 for adults and free for kids under five!
Next, head to the striking Museum at Prairiefire, with traveling exhibits from the American Museum of Natural History and an Insta-worthy exterior.
Add in an adrenaline rush at iFLY Indoor Skydiving, or try Topgolf and local escape rooms for even more fun.
If you have little ones, the Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead is a must. It’s a kid-friendly farm experience with animals, a fishing pond, pony rides, a one-room schoolhouse, and more. We stop by Deanna Rose any time we’re in the area!
