Sconset Bluff Walk: All You Need to Know
During our Nantucket getaway, the Sconset Bluff Walk was hands-down one of the best highlights.
From the sweeping ocean views on one side to the storybook New England cottages on the other, this trail is one you simply can’t miss.
If you’re planning a visit to Nantucket, this guide to the Sconset Bluff Walk has all you need to know: how to get there, what to expect, and tips for making the most of your time on this part of the island.

What Is the Sconset Bluff Walk?
Located on the east side of Nantucket Island in Massachusetts, The Bluff Walk is a public walking trail that winds between stunning Nantucket homes and the vast Atlantic Ocean.
As you meander along this narrow trail, you are literally walking through the backyards of some of Nantucket’s most beautiful homes. The smell of hydrangeas and honeysuckle fills the air, and everywhere you look is a new jaw-dropping view.

How Long is the Bluff Walk?
The Bluff Walk is two miles out-and-back. Most people finish the walk in about an hour, but we took our time–detouring down to the beach and stopping often to take photos.
The hike is rated as “easy” and has very little elevation gain, making it accessible for most.
Keep in mind that some sections are narrow, where you will have to walk in a single-file line. Because of this, strollers aren’t the best option for this trail.
How to Get to the Sconset Bluff Walk
There are many ways to get around Nantucket, including biking, driving, and public transportation. One of the easiest ways to get from downtown Nantucket to Siasconset (or ‘Sconset as the locals call it) is to take the WAVE shuttle. It takes just around 15 minutes and drops you off outside the Sconset Market.

Where the Bluff Walk Starts
The Bluff Walk starts just northeast of the Sconset Market, to the right of 21 Front Street. You will then take an immediate left right onto the trail.
Where the Bluff Walk Ends
The Bluff Walk once led all the way to Sankaty Head Lighthouse, but due to erosion, it now stops just shy of it. Today, the trail ends at a dead end, where you’ll take a left and loop back to Baxter Road.
Continuing Your Walk to the Sankaty Head Lighthouse
Even though the Bluff Walk no longer reaches Sankaty Head Lighthouse, it’s still a must-see. To visit the lighthouse, simply take Baxter Road north and you’ll run right into it. This iconic lighthouse has been used for more than 160 years and is still in operation today.

The closest public restrooms are located just north of the Sconset Market at the corner of New Street and Shell Street.

While most beach access along the trail is private, there is a public access point clearly marked with a sign and steps leading straight down to the beach. I highly recommend taking this detour–the beach is absolutely stunning!
